The Diabetes Project Unit Intensive Outpatient Program

A Program for Adolescents and Families to
Help Facilitate Lifestyle Adjustment to
Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

The child and adolescent years present every family with a series of unique challenges. Having a child or adolescent with diabetes often places extra demands on the family unit. Unlike their peers, adolescents with diabetes must pay close attention to their food intake, monitor blood sugars regularly, and be able to make quick decisions based on this information. All of these demands are placed on the adolescent at a time when conformity is valued and looking different is to be avoided.

For over 20 years, the Diabetes Project Unit has been helping adolescents and their families learn to manage their diabetes. The program has emphasized increasing adherence to the diabetes regimen through trust, cooperation and praise. Families are encouraged to have empathy for the challenges that their child faces, but also to channel this empathy into ensuring appopriate diabetes care.
